QuestionIs there a big difference between "corn syrup" and "high fructose corn syrup" as additives in certain foods? I shop at Trader Joes in L.A. and always thought they were health-conscious but recently I noticed some items, such as blueberry jam, contain corn syrup. Certain chocolate products also. In Ralph's,Vons, etc. it seems that they often carry products containing "high fructose corn syrup." Is there a difference? Thanks.
AnswerYes, there is a difference. "High fructose corn syrup" is much more refined and processed. BOTH, however, are bad for you, but HFCS is really, really bad for you.
I can't tell you the EXACT chemical difference, but I know to stay away from both of them. For sweeteners, I usually use Equal or Splenda. If I absolutely HAVE to have a sugar, I go with cane sugar.
