Considering Lap Band Removal? Understanding Your Options & Outcomes

Question
I had lap band surgery in July 2006 but, have not lost anyway even with the fills. After a while I felt I was wasting my money so, I stopped getting the fills. I have gained about 20lbs since I have had the lap band even when I had the fills. I don't eat much, eat slowly, and don't eat sugary food. I usually eat chicken, fish and vegetables. I don't eat bread much at all because it is very difficult to swallow. I am not a soda drinker, even before the band. I am ready to remove the band because I don't feel like it has benefited me at all.  Should I try gastric bypass or just forget the whole bariatric surgery options and,try to lose weight naturally again. I am scared to have the gastric bypass because it is not reversible and, there are many side effects. That is why I originally got the lap band instead. Please advise.

Answer
Dawn,
I'm really sorry you have not had success with your Band.  I am going to assume that you've gone as far as you can (gotten as much benefit as you can) from your original surgeon.  I should emphasize that before you give up completely you should be sure your original surgeon has a chance to help you as much as he/she can.

I want to reassure you that some people don't do well with a Band, but do find success with a gastric bypass or a gastric sleeve.  I understand you are a bit put off by the magnitude of the gastric bypass, but I recommend at this point for you to seek out a surgeon in your area who does gastric bypass surgery and Band surgery so you can get a fresh start.  A good way to find a great surgeon is on the website for our national organization:  www.asmbs.org

Best of luck!
