Aulmauracite: What Is It? Exploring the 'Wonder Rock'
QuestionHi there.. Do you have any idea what exactly this mineral is that is being sold as a 'wonder' rock (called Aulmauracite) on certain new age websites?
AnswerAulmauracite is not an approved mineral name and is not part of any mineralogical databases. From the few pictures and vague reference to geochemical assays that float around on the internet and in books, the "wonder mineral" is most likely specular hematite (Fe2O3). A simple test would be to drag the aulmauracite specimen across a unglazed porcelain plate (back of a bathroom tile for example). It should leave a reddish brown line indicating the presence of hematite. If you have a sample and would like it tested or assayed, we would do it for free as part of our Metropolitan State University of Denver community outreach.
