Is it OK to give a 3 week old baby water? He gets hiccups and was told that would help does;t sound right is it ok.
Answer -
Hello James. The best method is to simply put baby back to the breast and let him suck some more- that will calm the hiccups. To give water you would probably use a bottle and that is NOT a good thing- they can get very nipple confused. Hope that helps- Cheri.
I am sorry I forgot to state that the baby is on formula not breast feed. In that case I need just to know if water is bad for newborns. Thanks for your help. James.
AnswerHello James- well, I'll spare you the lecture about breastfeeding I guess- except to say that breastfed children are smarter and healthier than artificially fed children. Water is fine- in fact the stress on the kidneys from formula requires some extra water. Be sure it is sterile for the next few weeks. If it is at all possible to convince mother to breastfeed- it certainly is still possible- get back to me if you want more info. Cheri.
