QuestionHi Doctor,
I had IVF transfer with donor eggs 3 weeks ago, according to my HPT taken on day 11 post transfer it didn't work out I got a FAN , my blood test results are not in yet. The embryos were 8 cell day 3 and were very good. I am 43 and have had a tubal many years ago after my third child. Now I am being diagnosed as having chronic endometritis, this was found a month prior to my transfer so I was given 21 day antibiotic therapy with Doxy-tabs. My question is am I wasting my time trying IVF ? I do not have unlimited funds or insurance to cover it, we have enough money to try one more time and I want to know what are my odds with this condition using donor eggs.
Also I had heavy cramps after transfer for many days could this be a sign.
Thank you,
Sandy
AnswerHello Sandy from Canada,
With a history of endometritis, I presume your doctor took another biopsy after the course of antibiotics to verify that it was gone. If not, that should have been done prior to the IVF. You absolutely never want to put an embryo into a hostile environment.
Your failure of this cycle is tragic but does not mean that it cannot work. If you want another child, I would try at least one more time, although I encourage my patients to keep trying until they are successful. I know the financial aspects will usually limit most patients, but if you want it enough, you have to keep trying.
Having cramping after the embryo transfer is not a good sign. It is preferred that the uterus is quite. Studies have shown that even sub-clinical cramping (ones you don't feel), that can be recordedon an ultrasound will decrease implantation rates.
Also keep in mind that pregnancy rates are very much dependent on the clinic, the lab and the doctor performing the procedure. Because you fail once or twice, does not mean that you cannot become pregnant. Sometimes it is operator error, such as a poor embryo transfer. So, you need to keep all your options open, even if it means going to a different clinic.
