Why Am I Constantly Hungry? | Dr. Saleeby

Hi Dr. Saleeby,

I've been playing tennis almost everyday for about a month but I've noticed for awhile now that I've been feeling hungry too fast (probably from an increased metabolic rate).  I eat a meal, wait a couple of hours, feel hungry again and eat, wait again, and feel hungry again not long after.  The hunger is even waking me up earlier than usual after a night's sleep.  Do you have any suggestions to curb the hunger?  I'm wondering if I need to eat more protein and thought eating almonds may be a good idea, but I know that I should be giving myself more days to rest.

There may be more then one reason for the increased hunger.  Increased activity may actually be chief among the reasons however.  As you increase caloric burn you will need to replace the extra energy you expend and also replace glycogen stores in your liver and muscles.  This may be best achieved by immediate "recovery" meal or drink which should contain a higher glycemic index food within 30-minutes of completing exercise.  The recovery drink or meal should include simple sugars to replace those needed by your muscle as well as protein.  A well balanced diet should be standard in your health regimen... I usually refer people to Dr. Barry Sears' work in the "zone" diet recommendations (read "A week in the Zone").  The ratios of protein, carbs and fats are important and a reasonable starting point.

There are supplements that will help the body (and your cells) metabolize fat and carbs and protein while you exercise.  L-carnitine is principle among the substances called lipotropic agents.  As you increase your caloric intake to keep up with your expenditures, they will limit the amount stored as reserve fat.  Critical for not becoming obese with increased caloric intake.
