Understanding a 4mm Microcalcification Cluster: What You Need to Know
QuestionLast wk. I had my annual mammo done at the same hospital for the past 7yrs. all my mammo results were neg. 3 days later the nurse calls to tell me that I need to come back in asap for another mammogram for left breast only. within 2hrs I was back... The Dr. wanted too be sure of films that he compare to yr 06/07.. reason 1. I'm 50 yrs old, inpermenopause. reason 2. microcalifications cluster 1:00 at 4mm. The radiologist Dr. suggested that a sterotactic biopsy will be needed to diagonsis for cancer. anyways the hospital set appt with their breast care specialist team. I was schedule in the biopsy core room within hrs. my husband went to adm. me. while Im being prep for the stereotactic... Ive been that room for nearly 1 1/2 hrs.only to find out that now they cant do the biopsy at all but wait until 6mos. an do another mammmogram! what lot of drama they put me through.. I need your opinion on what is the right size 4mm etc: to do biopsy on? (sooo confuse) OH bytheway there's no B/C in my family history.... should I wait 6mos or seek a second opinion? Thankyou for your time...
AnswerWhy could they not do the biopsy? In my opinion a stereotactic needle biopsy SHOULD be done in this situation to KNOW what this is! I'm NOT happy with waiting 6 months! It may be nothing serious but we do NOT KNOW that so I definitely would like to see a biopsy done. Your mammography can also be complemented by an MRI breast scan to investigate this lesion further. If it is seen well in that scan an MRI guided needle biopsy can be done instead. Also if this lesion can be seen in an ultrasound scan an ultrasound guided needle biopsy can be done instead. All to avoid this waiting time. Please do keep me posted!
