Hair Dye Allergy & Sensitization: Understanding PPD and Future Risks

Question
Hi DR Claud,

I know this may be out of your field but, hey, I like you & I've gotta at least try. :-)

Ive recently found out that Im allergic to hair dye. More likely PPD (The ingredient).

Someone mentioned something about becoming "sensitized" to it. Also about allergies now to other "cousins of PPD".

I can NOT understand what sensitized means, even after reading up on it.......Am I at risk for allergic reaction in the future if I dont dye my hair anymore?
Can you explain it in laymans terms?

THX!!!!

Answer
Well, thanks for the compliment! Sensitization means that by it you become allergic to some substance. It is a process that happens within the immune system of your body. If you are allergic to something you do have a greater risk of becoming allergic to other similar substances and also to other unrelated substances - though at a somewhat smaller risk. But this IS outside my area of expertise here! The dying of your hair may give you problems, NOT not dying it! Good luck!
