Melanin: The Science Behind Your Hair Color

The pigment that determines hair color is melanin.

Specifically, there are two main types of melanin:

* Eumelanin: Responsible for brown and black hair. Higher concentrations result in darker hair.

* Pheomelanin: Responsible for red and blonde hair.

The ratio of these two types of melanin, as well as the overall amount of melanin, determines a person's hair color. The absence of melanin results in white or gray hair.
