Direct Visual Observation:
* Roots: The most obvious way is to check your roots, especially if you dye your hair. You'll see new hair growth at your scalp, which will be your natural hair color if you dye your hair. Even if you don't dye your hair, you can often see new, tiny hairs emerging from your scalp.
* Overall Length: This is a long-term indicator. Use a soft measuring tape to measure a specific strand from the root to the tip. Record the measurement, and then measure the same strand again a month or two later. If the length has increased, your hair is growing. Take pictures of your hair at various lengths can help you notice incremental growth.
* Edges/Baby Hairs: Many people focus on the growth of their edges (the fine hairs around the hairline). If you've been experiencing breakage or thinning around your hairline, look for these hairs becoming longer and fuller.
Indirect Indicators:
* Need for Trims: If you're someone who regularly trims your hair to maintain a certain style, you'll find that you need trims more frequently as your hair grows.
* Hair Weight: As your hair grows longer, you might notice that it feels heavier.
* Ponytail/Bun Size: A ponytail or bun might feel thicker or require more wraps of an elastic band as your hair grows longer.
* Products Used: You may need more hair products as your hair grows out.
Things to keep in mind:
* Average Growth Rate: Hair typically grows about 1/2 inch per month, but this can vary based on genetics, diet, health, and hair care practices.
* Shedding vs. Growth: It's normal to shed hair daily. Don't confuse shedding with a lack of growth.
* Breakage: Hair can grow but also break, leading to the illusion of no growth. Minimize breakage by using gentle hair care practices, moisturizing regularly, and avoiding harsh treatments.
* Consistent Routine: Having a good hair care routine can promote healthy hair growth, leading to less breakage.
If you're concerned about hair growth, consult a dermatologist or trichologist. They can assess your hair and scalp health and offer personalized advice.
