Hair Coloring & Shampooing: The Ideal Wait Time

It's generally recommended to wait at least 72 hours (3 days) after coloring your hair before shampooing. Here's why:

* Color Settling: The hair cuticle is opened during the coloring process. It takes time for the cuticle to fully close and for the color to properly settle and lock in. Shampooing too soon can disrupt this process.

* Prevent Fading: Shampooing washes away some of the dye molecules before they have a chance to fully bind to the hair shaft. This leads to faster fading and less vibrant color.

* Scalp Sensitivity: Coloring can sometimes irritate the scalp. Waiting allows the scalp to recover before being exposed to the chemicals in shampoo.

Tips to prolong your hair color:

* Use Color-Safe Shampoo: These shampoos are formulated to be gentler and less likely to strip color.

* Avoid Hot Water: Hot water opens the hair cuticle, releasing color. Use lukewarm or cool water when shampooing.

* Shampoo Less Frequently: Try to extend the time between washes as much as possible. Dry shampoo can be helpful for absorbing oil in between washes.

* Use a Color-Protecting Conditioner: Conditioner helps to seal the cuticle and lock in color.

* Protect from Sun: UV rays can fade hair color. Use a hair product with UV protection or wear a hat when spending time in the sun.
