Understanding the Layers of Skin: Epidermis, Dermis & Hypodermis

The three layers of skin, from outermost to innermost, are:

1. Epidermis: This is the outermost layer and provides a protective barrier against the environment. It's made up of several sublayers, with the outermost layer being the stratum corneum, composed of dead skin cells that are constantly shed. The epidermis also contains melanocytes, which produce melanin (the pigment that gives skin its color).

2. Dermis: This middle layer is thicker than the epidermis and contains blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands (oil glands). It's made of connective tissue, providing strength and elasticity to the skin. Collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis are crucial for skin's structure and flexibility.

3. Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Layer): This innermost layer is primarily made of fat and connective tissue. It helps insulate the body, cushion organs, and store energy. The hypodermis also connects the skin to the underlying muscles and bones.
