Pregnancy & Beauty: 10 Common Mistakes to Avoid During Pregnancy

Being pregnant is the world’s most joyous experience reserved just for us women!
Expecting a baby, however, comes with a lot of burden which takes a toll on one’s mental and physical health. While you try to cope with the on and off cramps, body aches and nausea, it could become a bit too demanding when it comes to taking care of your physical appearance. Trust me, as a first time mother, beauty is the last thing on your list of priorities. However, one does not have to look ugly just because you’re pregnant. The obvious glow on the face could be made to look exceptionally appealing by avoiding these 10 pregnant beauty mistakes:

1. Never ignore your skin:

A healthy skin care regime is very important even while you’re pregnant. No one matter how much your skin glows naturally, always remember to wash your face, then moisturize and tone it well.

2. Avoid bath products containing chemicals:

Remember, you’re at a very sensitive phase, and so is your skin. Any reaction to a chemical ingredients can cause itchiness and even rashes. That’s the last thing you want to deal with right now. So try switching to natural bath products

3. Avoid too much nail products:

There are not enough studies to prove that ingredients found in nail care products are toxic but one of the universities in North Carolina reports many abortions in nail salon employees. Nail products may contain many hazardous chemicals that could come in the way of a safe pregnancy. Now how safe is putting nail paints during pregnancy is unknown, so why take the chance? You could definitely forgo those flamboyant nail colors for nine months.

4. Avoid using tanning sprays:

Tanning sprays have been known to contain chemicals that are not so skin friendly if not used with protection. It can also harm the fetus growing inside you. It also tends to raise the body temperature that could prove to be dangerous for your unborn child.

5. Avoid skin lightening treatments:

Each pregnancy is different and some pregnant women tend to have pigmentation of the skin as a major problem. No matter how much you would want to get rid of the dark marks, say no to these skin whitening creams when you’re pregnant. Again, harmful chemicals could put you and your baby in danger. Wait till you deliver. That is the only safe solution.

6. Avoid hair removal by chemicals:

If you’re planning to have hair removed chemically, think twice. There are no studies that prove these methods to be absolutely safe during pregnancy. Use other alternatives like waxing your legs and hands, or use a razor for private areas.

7. Avoid using strong smelling perfumes:

Perfumes can often cause skin irritation, though it is very rare but it can also lead to asthma during pregnancy. If you’re already having breathing troubles, stay away from perfumes just for a while. A strong smell could get to your head and clog it. Better yet, use milder perfumes or don’t use it at all for just this period. One of the benefits of being pregnant is you tend to naturally smell good all the time. (At least that is what I’ve read in one of the pregnancy books)

8. Avoid getting a tattoo:

Tattoos involve needles which god forbid can cause life risking transmitted diseases. It’s not worth risking yours and the baby’s life at all. If you really do have an urge to get yourself a tattoo, try natural henna and not the black henna which has chemicals.

9. Avoid over-the-counter medicines:

Be sure about the beauty products you use especially if you have been using acne medicines. The ingredients are not safe and probably your doctor would ask you to stop them right away.

10. Avoid any hair treatment:

Hair sprays and hair chemicals in dyes are just not right at the moment. There are not enough studies to prove this, therefore, stay away from getting a new hair color till you’ve delivered. There are certainly lots of other ways to look beautiful while you’re pregnant.

There you go ladies. Skip these beauty mistakes to avoid more complications, thus gaining more confidence post delivery.
