Choosing the right ingredients for preparing bath bombs is quite crucial. Two factors should be considered while making this decision – firstly, that the ingredients are readily available, and secondly, you are aware of their quality and nature. Try not indulging in unknown ingredients, as doing so can create a mess. Furthermore, why invest in such things when you can prepare the bath bombs at home using your regular kitchen ingredients?
Care should be taken while selecting the fragrances or the essential oils. Although you need these in very small amounts, the right choice can go a long way in enhancing the fun when the bombs blast in the bath. You can pick up a few of your choices from the craft stores or the health food stores that carry ‘body safe’ oils. Avoid the products labeled oil warmers or candles.
The ingredient list has been divided into two parts, so that you can get all the things at one place systematically with ease.
Dry Ingredients (These should be chosen by weight by measuring on the scale):
Wet Ingredients:
Given here are some methods to make bath bombs at home:
Put all the dry ingredients in a big bowl. If possible, take a glass bowl, as it does not react with any chemical in the ingredient. Use a whisker to mix those clumps so that a mix of smooth consistency is formed. Make sure that the consistency and smoothness are the same all through the blend.
Blend all the wet ingredients together in a small jar so that you can shake the liquid well. With the oil and water, getting a full emulsion will not be possible. So, just ensure that the wet ingredients are mixed well without worrying about the separation. Keep on whisking the dry ingredients and slowly and simultaneously add the mix of wet ingredients to them in small amounts.
Sometimes you will see foam coming up from the mixture. It is because you are adding the liquid very fast. What to do now? Do not worry! The moment you notice the foam coming up from one part of the bowl, try whisking it to the non-reacting part and you would be able to get over the reaction. To avoid this, you must keep on adding the liquid slowly and in a small amount at a time. The best way is to take a measurement for adding, for example, a teaspoonful, so that the mixture is blended evenly just like slightly damp sand. Make sure the dampness is enough for the bomb to clump together on squishing.
Once both the wet and the dry ingredients are mixed together, you have very little time to get it into the molds. You can use different types of molds to prepare the bath bombs of your choice. Use the muffin cups or even the giant Soapy Hollow ball of the bath doom that are used to decorate the Christmas tree as the mold. Some other options can be ice cube trays, Aunt Magnolia’s denture case, candy molds, and more. Also, if your kids are giving a helping hand, you can use their soft clay molds to prepare animal and bird shaped bath bombs.
Filling up the molds requires a lot of practice, and if you are doing a three-dimensional bomb, you need to pack each side of it properly. Overfill the center a little more so that you can easily press the two sides.
It is quite possible that at the first attempt the filling will come out or fall apart. Do not get discouraged; keep on doing it. With a bit of practice, you will get a hang of it.
Make sure the bath bombs are not left in the mold for a very long time. It is better to tap them out the moment you are done with all of the filling.
If you are doing it for the first time, try doing it in small amounts – such as in batches of 5 or 6. Always remember that the humidity in the atmosphere makes the bath bombs puff. So, mold and unmold the stuff quickly. However, you can make an exception in the case of the silicon trays. In this case, the silicon surrounds the seltzer mix, and hence you must let the mold stay in them until they are dry, or else it will crumble when you try to take it out.
The same holds true if you are using a mold having a lot of details.
Once the bath bombs are dry, store them in an airtight bag or a container. Since high humidity causes them to activate, you must make sure that the lid of the container is tightly closed. Make sure that you use them within six months from making, as these DIY bath bombs do not contain preservatives, and the oil and water combination in it is subject to activate with a change in the surrounding conditions.
Now that you know how to make bath bombs, you must be wondering how to use it? Just drop the bomb in the tub and relax!
