Understanding Nail Growth: Purpose, Benefits & Health

Nails grow for a few key reasons:

* Protection: Nails protect the sensitive tips of our fingers and toes from injury. They act as a shield against impact, pressure, and minor trauma.

* Grip and Manipulation: Nails provide support to the fingertips, allowing us to grasp and manipulate objects more easily. They help us pick up small items, scratch an itch, and perform other fine motor tasks.

* Support: They support the soft tissues of the fingertips and toes, preventing them from becoming flattened or misshapen.

* Continuous Repair: Nails are made of keratin, a tough protein, and are constantly growing from the nail matrix located beneath the cuticle. As the nail grows, it pushes out old, dead cells to be replaced by new ones. This continuous growth helps repair any damage or wear and tear the nail may experience.

* Evolutionary Advantage: In our evolutionary past, nails may have been more important for digging, climbing, and defense. While we don't rely on them for these purposes as much today, the growth mechanism is still present.
