Ballerina inspired look is a summer makeup staple—and they’re particularly popular this season, thanks to its fresh-as-the-dawn look. But for a brighter take on this trend, don’t be afraid to think outside the box ala Natalie Portman in Black Swan. Ahead we show you how to recreate this ballerinas’ look at home.
Wash your face and moisturize immediately with SPF to help the makeup glide on smoothly. Dab on concealer to shrink blemishes. We recommend Almay Clear Complexion Concealer. Then apply a foundation (try oil-free Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation) followed by a translucent powder, like MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural to set the foundation. Make sure you blend the base evenly.
Next, accentuate your features by contouring your face, but do ensure you choose one shade lighter than your skin for a highlighter, and two shades darker for contouring. So apply (our favorites are Tom Ford’s Shade and Illuminate and YSL’s Touché Eclat Foundation) your lighter color on your T-zone. Now gently blend your highlighter with a flat foundation brush with your darker hue. In order to make your contour subtle, take a wet sponge, and gently press over your makeup to pick up any extra product.
Tip: To find your right shade, always test your foundation on your jawline in the daylight. If it disappears, then there you have your right shade.
Generally, we begin our eye makeup by applying eyeshadow first. But the ballerina dancers, however, start with their eyeliner. So, follow the line of your eye until it starts to dip down, and then go a little out (towards your brow bone) to make your eyes look a little bigger. Now, make sure the bottom doesn’t go out as far.
Next, create a good contrast by applying white eyeshadow, which also acts as your base for the rest of the eye makeup. Once done, use a white liner or skin tone shade of eyeshadow all over your lid. Finish off the look by curling your lashes and wiggling on mascara on your lashes. A coat or two will suffice since this is more of a fresh and natural look.
Tip: Blending is the key. So, use your finger or proper tools to apply a small amount of eyeshadow and blend it well. Remember that harsh lines on the eyes look good only on the catwalks.
Create a more dramatic look with full-looking eyebrows. To achieve this, use a white eyeshadow on the bottom of the eyebrows to highlight the brown bone. Now you can line the upper inner rims of your eyes with a matte white pencil. Follow by applying darker shade eyeliner around the white line and setting with a similarly dark brow powder.
To create the illusion of cheekbones, take a soft brush and sweep blush on the apples of your cheeks and blend with powder towards your temples with your fingertips. Our picks are Everyday Minerals Blush in Girl Friday and NYX Stick Blush in Water Lily that gives depth to any type of skin.
Tip: Remember that everything has to be balanced. Since blush is secondary and not a focal point, do not use too much of it. Also, use a clean and fresh makeup brush to avoid adding too much color.
To get perfect lips, begin with moisturizing your lips by applying lip balm. For further hold, dab off the extra moisture with a tissue. Now, outline the lips with a lip liner, and fill in with brighter lip color. Finish with dabbing a little concealer around your lips if extra hold is required, but it is not usually necessary.
Tip: For extra control of the lipstick, use a lip brush and apply the color just in the middle of your lips. Once applied, blend out gently using your fingertips.
