Eye Primer: The Ultimate Guide for Long-Lasting Eye Makeup
Beautiful eyes! That is what Indian women are most known for.
Most of us have figured it out. Using makeup to dress our eyes up bold and bright is a very Indian thing. Adding an eyeshadow primer to your regular makeup kit can help bring more life to your eyes.
What is Eye Primer?
An eye primer is a cosmetic product that forms a base for your eye makeup. This is applied on the upper eye lids prior to all the other eye makeup.
How Does an Eye Primer Help?
- An eye primer helps the eye shadow and eye makeup last longer. This means you don’t have to touch up or re-apply your eye makeup.
- It prevents your eye makeup from creasing and settling in the fine lines around your eyes.
- It brings out the colours making your eyes look bright and open.
- An eye primer helps even out the skin tone. It is also a great way to neutralize the effects of pigmentation on the eye lids.
- Using an eye primer will require you to use a lesser amount of eye shadow than you otherwise would.
- The eye primer helps blend in colours well, resulting in a seamless gradient. It contains silicone that helps keep the shadow in place and helps in blending.
- An eye primer forms a barrier between your skin and the makeup you are using.
Different Types of Eye Primers:
Eye primers can be of various kinds and come in all sizes and packaging.
The most common types of eye primers are:
- Eye primers in gel form
- Eye primers in cream form
- Eye primers in liquid form
- Ones that come in tubes
- Those that come in jars or pots
- Some also come in bullet form, like a lipstick, in a stick form
- Tinted eye primers
- Shaded eye primers
Eye Primer Shades:
Eye primers are mainly created in skin tones or neutral shades, as these are easy to blend in with your regular skin tone.
The various eye primer shades available are:
- Neutral shades: These are the most commonly used ones and are most easily available. Neutral toned eye primers cater to a big section of women. These can also be used as a concealer around the eye area to even out the skin tone on your lids and under the eyes.
- Bronze or brown shades: These shades are great for brightening the look of your eye makeup. Such shades work best with eye shadow colours in gold, bronze and brass tones. They help create a sun-kissed and tanned effect.
- Peach shades: Eye primers in peach shades will go best with eye shadows in pinks, peaches, yellow, coral or gold. Avoid using them if your eye shadow is too dark, metallic or blingy.
- Pink shades: These shades work best on women with a yellow undertone to their skin. A pink eye primer will work under almost any eye shadow colour. The pink shade also helps to even out the skin tone.
- Metallic shades: These mostly come with a gold undertone. They will work best with eye shadows that have a hint of gold, silver or bronze in them.
- White shades: These go best with eye shadows that are highly pigmented or are too bright. These work great on those who have a darker skin tone. Using a white eye primer can be a bit challenging. These are mostly used by professional makeup artists.
- Black shades: These are not that easily available and can mostly be found with professional makeup artists. A black eye primer helps create dark smoky eye looks. They are often also used by makeup artists to give the illusion of eyeliner.
How to Use Eye Primer:
Eye Primers can be applied over foundation or concealer but are best applied directly on the skin
- Apply a small amount of the primer over the lid
- Smooth this over the entire lid
- Blend it in properly using your finger or a concealer brush
- Move it up and out towards the brow area
- Primers should not be applied to the water line
- Try and apply it as close to your lash line as you can
- Let the primer set in for a minute or two before applying makeup
- Now apply your eye makeup the way you regularly apply
Using an eye primer will add that much more life to your eye makeup. The next time you plan to create that stunning eye look, give it a shot. Make sure you tell us the difference you noticed in making the beautiful eyes! Comment away!
