1. STOP, DROP, and ROLL:
* STOP: Halt whatever you're doing. Don't run around; this will fan the flames.
* DROP: Immediately drop to the ground.
* ROLL: Roll over and over on the ground, covering your face with your hands to protect it. This smothers the flames. Continue rolling until the fire is out.
2. IF SOMEONE ELSE IS ON FIRE:
* Tell them to STOP, DROP and ROLL!
* If possible, help them roll to smother the flames.
* If available, use a fire blanket, heavy coat, or any other large piece of non-synthetic fabric to smother the flames. Wrap it tightly around the person and help them roll.
3. EXTINGUISH AND COOL:
* Water: Once the flames are extinguished, immediately douse your hair (or the person's hair) with water. Keep pouring water on the burned area to cool it down.
* If water isn't available: Use any non-flammable liquid if possible (e.g., milk, juice, etc.)
* Don't use flammable liquids! (e.g., gasoline, alcohol)
4. REMOVE BURNING MATERIAL:
* Carefully remove any burned or smoldering pieces of hair or clothing from the area.
5. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION:
* Call emergency services (911 or your local equivalent) immediately. Even if the fire seems small, burns can be more serious than they appear.
* Do not apply ointments, lotions, or creams to the burn before seeing a medical professional.
* Keep the burned area clean and covered with a sterile bandage or clean cloth until medical help arrives.
Important Considerations:
* Prevention is key: Be extremely careful around open flames (candles, stoves, fireplaces, etc.). Tie back long hair when cooking or working with flammable materials.
* Know your fire extinguishers: If you have a fire extinguisher, know how to use it, but never prioritize using an extinguisher on hair or clothing over the Stop, Drop, and Roll method. Extinguishers are usually more effective on other types of fires.
* Synthetic vs. Natural Fabrics: Synthetic fabrics (like nylon or polyester) melt easily and can stick to the skin, causing severe burns. Natural fabrics (like cotton or wool) are less likely to melt and are therefore safer.
In summary, the priorities are:
1. Extinguish the flames immediately.
2. Cool the burned area.
3. Seek professional medical help.
