Kim Kardashian's Hairdresser Reveals the Secret to a Perfect Messy Bun

Ah, the messy bun. The ultimate I've-done-nothing hairstyle that actually takes a lot of effort and skill for it to look perfectly imperfect. Until now.

Common complaints include misbehaving baby hairs, tiny bun syndrome (often caused by finer hair types or hair loss) and just plain old lack of know-how – but star stylist Chris Appleton has a solution with his viral TikTok hack.

The hairdresser, who counts Kim Kardashian as a client as well as Ariana Grande and Jennifer Lopez, has already racked up 8.7 million views on the video, which sees him create a textured 'do with soft baby strands at the hairline. And even better, it looks pretty doable.

Chris reassured fans that the style will work for different types of hair in the voiceover, saying: “[It's] perfect for thin or thick hair.” To create his messy bun look, he essentially splits the hair into high ponytails, pulling them into loops and twisting them together.

The technique is super simple and quick:

1. Split the hair down the middle and create two high ponytails.
2. Pull each ponytail into a bun/ loop by only pulling your hair around halfway through on the final twist of your hairband.
3. Once you’ve got two buns, cross them over each other (pull one loop through the other loop) and then pin them into place.
4. Add some product into your hair for a bit of volume and hold - Chris uses the Color WOW Style on Steroids Texturising spray.
5. Then, tuck in the very ends of the hair and pin into place.
6. Make any personal touches you like, add some more product, give it a zhuzh, or dress out your baby hairs with some product on a soft brush (Chris uses a toothbrush) to create a gorgeous wispy look.

Unsurprisingly, the genius hack got plenty of comments. One viewer wrote: “Oh. My. GAWD,” before later adding: “UPDATE. I did this today & it's f*cking PERFECT!! This is a gamechanger for me & I'm so happy."
