The first public hairdressing salon was established in 1880 by Marcel Grateau (also known as François Marcel) in Paris, France.
While there were individuals who cut and styled hair before this, Grateau's salon is recognized as the first *public* establishment offering hairdressing services in a salon setting. He is also credited with inventing the "Marcel Wave."
