DIY Leave‑In Conditioner: Protect Your Hair Daily

The sun and pollution is what our hair struggles against on a daily basis. Add to that our own styling tools and the chemicals, the result is true damage.

There are various ways to treat your hair. Hair masks, conditioning treatments and sessions at the spa are a few long term treatments you can do for your hair. A great way to ensure your hair is protected on a daily basis is by using a good leave in conditioner.

What is a leave in conditioner?

A leave in conditioner is very much like your regular conditioner. The only difference is that a conditioner needs to be rinsed off after wash, while the leave in conditioner can be worn the entire day.

How does a leave in conditioner help?

  • A leave in conditioner helps bring in the moisture back to your hair.
  • This makes hair stronger and healthier
  • It adds protection and shine to your hair
  • A leave in conditioner will prevent build up in your hair
  • Keeps you hair grease free
  • Makes it easier to remove knots and tangles
  • Makes it easier to create various styles without breaking hair
  • Forms a protective layer between your hair and pollution or UV rays
  • Forms a protective layer between your hair and styling tools and products
  • Especially good if you are using a heat based tool

Why do you need a leave in conditioner?

You would typically need a leave in conditioner if:

  • You have dry or very dry hair
  • You have frizzy hair
  • You have curly hair
  • If your hair is exposed regularly to sun and pollution
  • If you keep your hair open a lot
  • If you have any or all of the above

An average leave in conditioner can cost anywhere between INR120 to INR500. Those of you who are giving it a first shot can start by trying a homemade leave in conditioner. Once you are comfortable, you can either buy an expensive and branded one, or continue with the same. The homemade leave in conditioner will cost you half the market price and work as effectively. It is perfect for adding that hint of moisture to your hair during the harsh winter season. It will also ensure you have healthy and protected hair all year through.

Things you will need to make the homemade leave in conditioner:

  • A spray bottle
  • Some tap water
  • Your favourite hair conditioner

Steps to make the leave in conditioner at home:

  • Make sure that the spray bottle you are using is completely clean. There should be no residue of any kind.
  • Add 75 % water and 25 % conditioner in the bottle.
  • Stir it well so that both the ingredients are mixed properly.
  • Do not shake the bottle as otherwise it will form a cuff and will not spray properly.
  • You can dilute the mixture further depending on the consistency of your conditioner.
  • The end result should look like butter milk.
  • After washing your hair with shampoo spray about 4 squirts into your hair.
  • Focus mostly on the ends.
  • Make sure you do not spray too much as it can make your hair greasy.

Depending on your hair texture, thickness and length, you may have to play around with the proportions a little bit. Remember that adding more conditioner can make your hair greasy. Be sure to add water accordingly and dilute well.

The above mix is good to act as a protecting agent for your hair. Another great way to make sure that your hair gets all the more nourishment is by adding a few drops of hair oil.

Some great hair oils that you can add to your home made leave in hair conditioner are:
