Ayurvedic Seasonal Health: Cleansing for Well-being

Change of season times bring change to our internal environment too, and we tend to be more vulnerable to dis-ease at these junctures. Ayurvedic medicine (traditional Indian medicine and a sister science to Yoga) encourages us to make these transitions beneficial to our health and well being by cleansing.
A cleanse can be as simple as giving up sugar and alcohol and taking time to chill out, away from screens. Or there are food and herb based cleanses which can help remove deeper toxins.
Simply scraping your tongue and gently removing the toxins there first thing every morning is already cleansing. So don't be put off, as a cleanse doesn't need to involve heaps of money and starving oneself!

Most of us could improve our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health by regularly cleansing. In my practice as a naturopathy and herbalist, I constantly see the improvement in my patients' health and wellbeing from simple suggestions. I also incorporate Ayurvedic health practices and my cleansing guidance has become more individualised. We all have different needs so Ayurveda tailors cleanses specifically to each individual. But we can all safely practice the cleansing suggestions outlined below. If you have a disease already then please check with your health practitioner before starting a cleanse.

There are a few obvious indicators of toxicity (or Ama) and they are:
Constipation or sluggish elimination
Lowered energy levels
Feeling foggy, or reduced concentration/memory etc
Skin outbreaks, pimples or rashes
Bloating or tiredness after meals
Heartburn, acid stomach and flatulence
Dullness in your eyes or discoloured sclera (the white part of your eyes)
Tightness in your muscles
Stiffness
Your stool (poo) sinks and/or is quite smelly
Weight gain

If you have any of these symptoms then a gentle cleanse to improve your health is definitely a good idea.
Start scaping you tongue every morning
Sip lemon water or plain Hot water
Avoid alcohol, sugar, caffeine, fried foods, and over eating.
Take some herbs

Herbs for cleansing

Cleansing herbs target specific areas in your body where ama accumulations have built up. Ideally I would advise having an individual consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner or trained herbalist. This helps you isolate the areas in your body to begin focusing on, while also advising which herbs would be better suited for you.
If this isn't possible, then simply start with a mix of cleansing herbs, including such herbs as Burdock, Dandelion Root, Red Clover, Ginger, Andrographis and Fennel. And/or use the Ayurvedic herbal cleanse powder called Triphala or jump in and get the Mullum herbals easy cleanse and go for it!

Herbs are one of Mother Nature's gifts to us and can be very effective in cleansing and clearing the channels and cells of our body. At the same time, they can play an important role in nourishing and stimulating our body to function optimally. Herbs will also improve digestion and once we have cleansed the toxins from our system good digestion will help prevent it from recurring.

The best herbs to use are those freshly picked from your own organic garden. The next best are our own herbs from Mullumbimby Herbals! Our herbs are organically grown and harvested and processed in such a way as to maintain their medicinal and vibrational properties, so they really work. The quality of a herb (just like the quality of our food) is very important. Some herbs and foods may be cheaper if not organic, or if imported - but is it really cheaper if they don't work or worse, if they contain pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria etc.
Especially while cleansing, organic choices are important.

The way you take your herbs is up to you. There is a choice of liquid herbal extracts, powdered herbs, dried herbs (these need to be simmered), or encapsulated herbs.
So give it a go. Put aside a few days, scrape your tongue, simplify foods, rest, be in nature, brew up some herbs and support yourself to be healthy.
