Once the excitement has faded a bit and you've settled in to a nice schedule with your new little addition, every parent wishes to know what they can do to get infant to sleep through the night. Those sleepless nights add up quickly, and can simply take a toll on the sleep deprived.
It is crucial to remember to be patient with your newborn, as they are not physically able to sleep through the night. Newborn and infant stomachs are just able to hold a couple of ounces at a time. Because of this, they wake for food each few hours, when their little bodies have burned through the most recent few ounces they've been fed.
When baby is old enough to handle around 4 ounces at a time, they can be expected to sleep in 4 - 6 hour stretches. An old wives' tale states that for every ounce a baby eats, he can sleep the equivalent in hours. While this is not a scientific fact, it does generally hold true.
Once baby is old enough to sleep in three to 4 hour stretches, it's time to implement the day versus night schedule. While ignoring infant's needs in the night time is absolutely not an option, it is significant to show baby that night time is for "business only". This means that when you need to tend to infant's needs, there should be as few lights on as possible, little talking and no playing at all. Once your baby's needs have been met, do a shortened version of a night time routine.
Each family's routine to get baby to sleep through the night will be different, and it for sure does not have to be extravagant. What is significant is that it's consistent so that infant starts to associate those particular actions with going to sleep. Remaining consistent over a week or so will soon teach baby that night time is for sleeping, and you can starting sleeping through the night, too!
