Bleach is commonly used to get rid of mildew, but it is not safe for every surface. Fabrics, unfinished wood and even some kinds of vinyl can become discolored if they are exposed to bleach. Color-safe bleach can be used in some cases, but killing the mildew with alcohol is a safer solution. Just be certain to get the surface as clean as possible before applying the alcohol, because alcohol will not get rid of the stains mildew leaves behind the way bleach will.
Fix the problem that is causing the mildew in the first place. Mildew will return quickly if the moisture problem has not been addressed. Consider investing in a dehumidifier.
Remove any surface mildew with a scraper or paper towels.
Scrub mildewed surfaces with hot, soapy water. Use a scrub brush or Scotch-Brite pads to clean them thoroughly.
Rinse the surface with water. Mildew can grow on soap, so it's important not to leave behind any residue.
Mix a 50/50 solution of water and rubbing alcohol. Apply it to the mildewed area and let it air-dry. The alcohol will kill the mildew.
