A duvet cover and filler is an excellent way to dress up your bed while still allowing for a good deal of versatility. You can change your duvet cover with the seasons or with your mood to bring new colors and textures to the bedroom for significantly less than a new comforter set. A duvet cover can also be removed from the filler and washed as needed, making it much easier to launder your bedding on a regular basis. The proper size for your duvet cover and filler will ensure that your bed looks neat and well kept with its new bedding.
Measure the length and width of your mattress to determine what size it is. A twin mattress is 39 inches wide by 74 inches long. A full mattress is 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. Queen mattresses measure 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. A king mattress is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, and a California king is 72 inches wide by 84 inches long.
Examine your bed frame, and decide how you want the duvet cover to fit. If you want it to tuck neatly inside the frame, a cover that is the same size as your bed will fit nicely. If your bed sits very high off the ground or you have a large bed frame that you want the cover to hang over and conceal, a larger size may better fit your needs.
Purchase or sew a duvet cover to fit the size of your bed. If you are making your own cover, a twin bed generally needs a cover that measures 59 by 79 inches. Make the cover 79 by 79 inches for a full mattress, 88 by 86 inches for a queen, 102 by 86 inches for a king and 102 by 90 inches for a California king mattress.
Select a duvet filler that is the same size as the cover you have chosen. Selecting a larger filler may seem like an easy way to make it feel fuller, but this will only result in a misshapen duvet.
