While it will certainly protect your purchase, opening plastic packaging can be a challenge. Also known as “Clamshell” plastic, it is designed to prevent the package from being opened prior to purchase, which helps reduce theft. Opening the packaging is best done using a pair of kitchen scissors. You can also buy a specific packaging removal tool that is designed to make opening packages much easier.
Hold the plastic package in your hand and identify the areas that cannot be cut during the opening process. If there are paper instructions or headphones with small wires, you will want to avoid this part of the package when you open it.
Align the opening tool so the cutting groove is resting on the top corner of the packaging.
Hold the packaging and opening tool so the motion will be away from your body. Slide the opening tool down the length of the plastic packaging to create a cut.
Align the opening tool at the corner of the cut and slide the tool across the bottom of the packaging. The two cuts should create an “L” shape.
Pull the plastic packaging apart carefully and remove its contents.
Hold the packaging in one hand and the scissors in the other. Place the scissors at the starting point for your first cut, making sure you will not cut through any instructions or other needed items inside the packaging.
Cut the length of the packaging. Place your scissors at the bottom of your packaging and make a second cut across the bottom. The two cuts will create and “L” shape opening.
Hold the bottom corner of the cut carefully and pull the packaging open to provide access to the contents.
