Effective Ways to Eliminate Pet Odors from Your Home

While animals may be a beloved part of your household, a strong odor is less welcome. Animals that are well-cared for and healthy have very little smell, and a strong, foul odor is a sign that something is wrong. A powerful scent may linger on the animal itself, or it may cling to areas where the animal has relieved itself. There are many methods for removing pet odor from your home.

Pet Odor on Carpet

  • Pour a small amount of white vinegar onto the carpet where the pet odor is particularly strong. There should be enough to make the carpet feel wet to the touch, but not soaked.

  • Allow the vinegar to soak into the carpet for 5 minutes.

  • Blot the area with paper towels until it is quite dry.

Pet Odor Near a Litter Box

  • Fill the cat's litter box using unscented litter that clumps together.

  • Scoop your cat's litter at least twice a day. This ensures that the waste is cleared out and that the odor does not build up.

  • Use a covered litter box to confine the existing scents to the area.

Pet Odor on the Dog

  • Brush the dog every few days. Brushing the dog's hair regularly removes debris and oils and trapped odor.

  • Clean the dog's ears with cotton swabs or cotton balls, especially if your dog has droopy ears. Ear infections cause a foul odor to emit from the dog's ears.

  • Take your dog to the veterinarian if the odors come from its anus or its mouth. The dog may be having a gastrointestinal issue or it might need its anal glands expressed.
