Stainless steel is a coveted metal because of its ability to resist stains and rust. High quality, polished stainless steel has a brilliant shine. Over time, however, the stainless steel will get dull as the metal oxidizes. You can restore the stainless steel to a brilliant shine. Make your own polishing compound to save money and to control the chemicals you introduce into your home's air environment. Be aware that matte stainless steel will not have as brilliant of a shine.
Add just enough water to ¼ cup baking soda to make a thick paste that is the same consistency as toothpaste.
Apply the baking soda paste to the stainless steel with a clean cloth.
Rub the baking soda paste in the same direction as the stainless steel grain. This is what will help make the stainless steel shine.
Rinse the cloth with clean water and wring it so that it is slightly damp.
Rub the cloth over the stainless steel in the direction of the grain to rinse the baking soda paste.
Wipe the stainless steel with a clean cloth in the direction of the grain until the stainless steel is dry.
Apply a small drop of baby oil to the stainless steel. Do not apply more baby oil as it will simply attract dust and dirt.
Rub the baby oil into the stainless steel with a paper towel. Follow the direction of the grain to make the stainless steel shine.
