Peel Pears Easily with an Apple Peeler: A Clever Kitchen Hack

The best way to get the most bang for a buck is to purchase culinary devices that have a universal purpose. A device that has such a universal allure to its design is the apple peeler. In recent years, the apple peeler has helped many fresh apple pie makers in the kitchen with the speed in peeling and slicing to make swift batches deserts. However, to expand beyond the peeling and slicing merely an apple, the apple peeler will also peel pears. This universal design comes in two forms with the first being a suction design and the second is a bolt tighter on a counter top.

Suction Apple Peeler

  • Place the apple peeler on a kitchen counter and pull the lever from the front of the machine, indicated by the peeler, to the back, indicated by where the crank is. Ensure the suction base has secured the peeler in place.

  • Remove pear stem. Where stem was removed, place the pear on the coring/crank. Loosen the wing-nut bolt at the other end to adequately secure the bottom of the pear in the apple peeler. The blade is now aligned toward the base of the pear, but not directly on the base, to allow for the peeling.

  • Put your hand on the crank and twist it in a clockwise motion, or away from your body, to peel the pear. This cranking motion moves the entire pear along the blade.

  • Loosen the wing nut from the apple peeler and gently push back the metal part to extract the pear from the apple peeler. Lay the pear off to the side and repeat the steps for any other pears to be peeled.

Progressive Counter Top Clamp Apple Peeler

  • Find the screw on the bottom of a progressive counter top clamp, and twist the clamp counterclockwise. Open the clamp to the size of the counter top that you will be working to peel the apples. Slide the apple peeler onto the counter and from underneath locate the screw of the clamp. Secure the apple peeler to the counter top by moving screw closer in a clockwise motion until it is firmly secured.

  • Remove the pear's stem if needed. Place the destemmed side on coring/crank. Proceed to loose the wing-nut bolt at the other end to adequately secure the bottom of the pear in the apple peeler. The blade is now aligned toward the base of the pear, but not directly on the base, to allow for the peeling.

  • Put your hand on the crank and twist it in a clockwise motion, or away from your body, to peel the pear. This cranking motion will move the whole pear along the peeler.

  • Loosen the wing nut from the apple peeler and gently push back the metal part to extract the pear from the apple peeler. Lay the pear off to the side and repeat the steps for any other pears to be peeled.

  • Remove the apple peeler by locating the screw beneath the kitchen counter top and in a counterclockwise twist begin to loosen the clamp. Slide the clamp off the counter top and proceed to thoroughly clean it.
