Safely Remove Burned-On Stains from Stainless Steel Cooktops

Stainless steel appliances lend a sleek and modern look to the kitchen. Cooktops in stainless steel are often touted for their good looks and ease of cleaning. If dinner got a little out of hand and the resulting burned mess is clinging to your stove top, it creates a rather frustrating problem. Burned on food can be effectively removed quite simply with the help of a few household items.

Things You'll Need

  • Soft clean cloth
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Dampen a soft clean cloth with hot water and scrub away as much of the burned on food as possible. Scrub in the direction of the grain and then against it.

  • Heat a small amount of white vinegar in the microwave and dab it onto the remaining burned on stain.

  • Allow the area to soak for 10 minutes, and make sure the vinegar doesn’t dry up. Sponge more hot vinegar onto the area as needed.

  • Sprinkle baking soda over the dampened stain and scrub with the grain with a soft clean cloth. The baking soda will cause the vinegar to fizz lending extra scrubbing power. Baking soda is a mild abrasive that won’t scratch up the stainless steel.

  • Wipe the area clean with warm soapy water and repeat the process until the stain is gone.
