Pre-eclampsia: Understanding Risks and Early Detection in Pregnancy

It is due to some disorder caused in the placenta, which maintains the supply of food and nutrients from the mother to the baby. As a result of its disorder, the baby's growth may be hampered. In acute conditions, the baby may start feeling suffocated and claustrophobic inside so that a premature seizure may be the only emergency option available. The problems in placenta can have several reasons. Mothers who are overweight or aged above 40 are more prone to it than the others.

Pre-eclampsia symptoms may involve many a thing like swelling of the hands and feet, excessive weight gain due to higher fluid retention in the lower abdomen, excessive pain than normal in the higher abdomen during pregnancy and frequent vomiting. The early pre-eclampsia symptoms are high protein in the urine and consistently high blood pressure of the mother. Other symptoms that may follow in gradually may involve blurring vision, severe headaches and feeling unwell and restless all the time. This problem can affect the mother very adversely. The best treatment is a premature birth, but that may not be possible at once and may be dependent on the baby's growth. In such case, the mother is exposed to many a health risk that may include eclampsia, a seizure that can be life threatening. Besides, the mother may develop [censored] P syndrome in which there are manifestations of liver disorder and problems with the clotting of blood. This may result in kidney and liver failure, making situation worse for the patient and the doctor. The ultimate risk is that of a stroke that can be fatal to the pregnant mother. The baby is also harmed very deeply. As the baby's growth is hindered, there are chances of disabilities creeping in. A premature birth also exposes the baby to risk of coping up with the outer world much before the body has prepared for that.
