In the US where it currently stands as the number one country with the most number of incarcerated people, the highest prisoner population and has the highest incarceration the situation is much more disturbing than that. In a country that claims that freedom, truth and justice is always uphold, situations in prisons speaks otherwise. Case in point is the recent trending reports on women where their basic needs aren't met. The population of the incarcerated maybe predominantly male but still there must be an equal need for women in treatment specially their specific needs. Check down the situations below.
Shortage of Sanitary Napkins
The Government has a lot of budget allocated to keeping prisons afloat, but the shocking thing is only 5 napkins a week are given to female prisoners when they have their period. In a span of 5 days, on 5 napkins? That is not enough as there are cases where the menstrual flow is so heavy, a napkin a day would not suffice. Women in prison are then often forced to use the same napkin even if it's already full and are always at risk of it always coming off as the adhesive on it is no longer sticky enough. They are always at risk of repeating a used napkin because of its scarcity and the often results to infections and other feminine hygiene related diseases.
Inadequate Care for Pregnant Women
Some inmates get arrested, without knowing they are already pregnant. And even if they are pregnant during the arrest you'll still get the same treatment because to the prison guards eyes your first a prisoner, second a pregnant human. And jails, are not really a good place to be pregnant as, you need monthly medical checkups to keep an eye on the baby's health and the meals served on prison are not really that healthy. There was even a case when a Nebraska pregnant inmate was about to give birth and she was shouting to call the attention of the guards because she was about to give labor. Instead the guards beat her up and shackled her to her bed and left there in agony. Sadly the baby died.
Prohibiting Communication to Love Ones
This is given as a form of punishment to women especially, mothers oftentimes as a form of blackmail. As a mother being far away from your children you have a sense of paranoia and duty to check up and know the situation of your children every chance you get. But if discount prison calling plans are taken away for no reason at all or for the tiniest of reasons or mistakes it is just plain wrong and pure torture.
