Fall Wellness: Yoga & Ayurveda for Balancing Vata Dosha

Yoga and Ayurveda for the Fall Season- Balancing Vata

In the autumn season, vata dosha becomes high. As the cool, dry, quick air the blows the leaves to the ground, the cold and flu season begins. You may notice that your hair, skin, and eyes become dry. Physically, some may experience cold hands and feet and constipation. Mentally, certain people tend to experience more anxiety and nervousness as the flighty vata dosha enters the mind. Especially for those that are already high in their vata dosha, it is important to take steps to balance the changes that come with autumn. Below are a few helpful Ayurvedic tips for staying healthy as the cooler weather approaches.

Stay warm by dressing in layers and eating warm food. Avoid cold drinks and instead choose room temperature water. A nice treat to warm the body is warm soy or rice milk with cinnamon and nutmeg. Avoid raw foods and instead cook root vegetables, soups, and stews. Choose herbal tea as opposed to coffee to stay grounded. You could even try a baked apple with cinnamon. Cook with warming spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper, and cumin. It’s best to eat a few smaller meals throughout the day to keep your energy high and prevent sleepiness.

Use oils to keep the body grounded. Throughout the day take a few deep breaths using aromatherapy with scents like sandalwood, patchouli, clove, cinnamon, and sweet orange. If the oil is safe for your skin, you can also place a few dabs on your wrist or neck. Remember to keep the skin oiled as well to prevent dryness and keep the joints moist. Sesame oil will work just fine and is not too expensive. Massage the oil on your skin, always making movements towards the heart. Around the belly move your hand in a clockwise motion to aid in digestion. You may also want to add some more olive oil or flaxseed oil into your diet.

Stay grounded by connecting with the Earth. This may entail a short walk outside in order to harmonize your body with nature. Be mindful of your feet as they touch the ground. Notice the changes in your heartrate. Breathe deeply. Take in all of the sights around you and stay in the present moment.

Overall, it is important to stick to a routine and maintain your daily meditation, pranayama, and asana practice. Go to bed before 10:30 pm and wake-up on or before 6:00 am. Keeping your body in a regular pattern will help aid in digestion and helps your mind and body better adjust to the changing season.
