10 Common Habits Damaging Your Eyesight (and How to Fix Them)

A healthy body is one of the greatest gifts of god. But often we take these gifts for granted. Take your eyes for example. How often do you wonder if you are taking care of your eyes? Some bad habits for your eyes could be ruining your eyesight. In fact, how many of us even bother about getting an eye checkup every year? Some habits that are bad for your eyesight should be quit immediately.

In most cases, you don't even know about the things that hurt your eyes. For example, the most basic gadgets like mobile phones, tabs and laptops these days are actually hurting your vision. The worst situation is with kids who tend to use these gadgets right from their cradle. You need to be aware of the things that are bad for vision.

Only when you know what are the bad habits for your eyes, you can get rid of them. A habit is something that we are so used to doing that we do it subconsciously. For instance, squinting is something that hurts your eye badly. However, many of us squint out of habit even when it is not required.

Here are some bad habits for your eyes that you should work at changing if you want your eyes and vision to be healthy.

Watching Movies On Laptops/Tabs

It is the latest trend to watch movies on laptops and especially tablets while traveling. You are also watching the screen from close proximity. This habit actually puts a lot of strain on your eyes.

Reading In Insufficient Light

When you read under the covers of your blanket or in a room that has insufficient light, then you are hurting your eyes. It is one of the bad habits for your eyesight.

Not Eating Orange Fruits & Vegetables

Orange fruits and vegetables are rich in Vitamin A which in turn is very nutritious for your eyes. If you deprive your eyes of good food, your vision will deteriorate faster than it should.

Reading While Travelling

Reading while travelling by road or train is one the worst habits. The rocking motion of the vehicle makes you sway and your eyes have to keep adjusting to the movement. This adds strain on your eyes.

Not Wearing Sunshades

UV radiation is not good for your eyes. And not wearing sunglasses while you go out in the sun will damage your eyes. It also makes you squint which is bad for your eyes.

Not Blinking While Working On Computer

We are so busy with our work that we often forget to blink while staring at the screen. This habit makes your eyes dry up. You need to keep blinking every few seconds so that your eyes stay moist and get a break from the glare of the screen.

Squinting

Squinting is a very bad habit for your eyes. When you squint, you are literally screwing up your eyeballs to read what is there on the screen. This will put too much pressure on your eye lenses.

Not Going For Regular Eye Check Ups

Ideally, you should get your eyes checked every year to be sure that you don't need correctional lenses or your eye power has not changed. But most people are too busy to get their eyes checked these days.

Smoking

Smoking is bad habit that affects every part of your body. Smokers are prone to cataracts at a younger age than non-smokers.

Watching Television While Lying Down

Being a couch potato can ruin your eyesight. When you just lie on the sofa and watch television, you are putting strain on your eyes for watching television at an odd angle. It rapidly deteriorates your vision.
