Is the mango your favourite fruit? But then, you had to take it off your grocery list because you are a diabetic patient? Is mango good for diabetes? Well, here is some good news for you. Your favourite fruit is healthy to eat even if you are diabetic!
Yes! And wondering how that is possible? Then you should give this post a read!
In the simplest of terms, diabetes is a medical condition in which there is an excess amount of sugar in the human blood. The high amount of blood sugar results in the damage of blood vessels. Since the medical situation arises because the body has more than the amount of sugar that is necessary, you may wonder how a mango, which tastes sweet, is beneficial. The information below aims to clear off such doubts.
Mango contains iron, potassium, folic acid, vitamin A, C and B6, nutrients and fiber that help in keeping your body fit. Interestingly, according to a study by ‘Wellness Foods A to Z: An indispensable guide for health-conscious food lovers’ mango also happens to be the most widely consumed fruit across the globe.
It is a common myth that since mango is one of the sweetest fruits we have, it adds to one’s weight. But several studies conducted across the globe break this myth proving that mango helps in controlling sugar levels in the body.
In the most recent study conducted by scientists, 20 adults within the age group of 20 years and 50 years were chosen. The batch of adults consisted of 11 men and 20 women. Scientists calculated their BMI and sugar levels at the beginning of the experiment.
For three months, which was the study term, each one consumed 10 grams of freeze-dried mango every day. Along with their freeze-dried mango, the batch continued to intake its regular diet and diabetic medication. At the end of the third month, when each one’s sugar level was examined, it revealed that the blood glucose levels had come down. It was, thus, concluded that diabetic patients can eat mango without having to worry about its harmful effects.
Mango has an antioxidant called mangiferin which probably could be the reason behind decreasing glucose levels. But the exact mechanism as to what leads to a drop in the glucose level in the blood is yet to be established.
So, the study clearly states that while the mango may be a sweet fruit which contains high calories, the way it works within the body on consumption helps in the glucose management in the human body.
If you are a pregnant woman and are suffering from gestational diabetes, then mango is not suitable for you. Gestational diabetes is a condition that develops only during the pregnancy period. In this situation, the sugar level in the blood becomes too high. If you eat a mango, it only adds to increasing the glucose level. Also, mango’s miraculous style of managing the glucose level in the body (which we have discussed above) doesn’t work during gestational diabetes.
This type of diabetes cures post delivery. Once your baby is born, the problem resolves on its own.
Diabetic patients can either eat freeze-dried mango or go for mango leaves. To consume mango leaves, boil 2-3 leaves and drink the water. It works well to keep the glucose levels under control.
While researches do prove that mango is good for diabetes, it is advisable that you consult your doctor before deciding on the amount of mango you must eat.
