After all, “the research is very clear: Women who use vibrators have easier and more frequent orgasms,” says psychologist and sex therapist Laurie Mintz, PhD, author of Becoming Cliterate.
Why? Vulvas have “special receptors for vibrations,” Mintz explains, so using a vibrator can actually provide a type of stimulation that your vulva loves but can’t get from a human hand, tongue, or penis. Suction vibrators aren’t for everyone, notes Richmond. But if you like the feeling of receiving oral sex, you’ll want to invest in one of these high-tech toys. They use sonic air technology to stimulate the clitoris through pulsations as opposed to vibrations. This sensation often feels like receiving oral sex, says Richmond, but is less ideal if you like to grind against your toy.
Ultimately, WH’s reviewers found the Womanizer Premium 2 to be the best and most discreet suction vibrator on the market. “The Womanizer Premium 2 is super easy to use and intuitive, and I liked the patterns. The feel was also very luxurious,” said one reviewer.
They also praised Womanizer’s unique Smart Silence feature, which prompts the toy to turn on and off automatically, depending on whether it’s pressed to (or removed from) a person’s body: “I was impressed; I’ve never had a toy that did that before! It went quiet when not in contact with skin, which definitely helped keep it discreet.”

Of the pint-sized vibrators our testers reviewed, they enjoyed the discreetness and pinpointed precision of the We-Vibe Tango X and Je Joue Duet, but found Maude’s flagship bullet vibrator packed the largest punch.
One reviewer called this their “new go-to bullet” and specifically praised the unusual appearance of the Maude Vibe. “It has a unique, almost cone-like shape, which allowed me to mix up the way I used it,” they said. “The tip is perfect for pinpointed clitoral stimulation, but if you’re not in the mood for that kind of precision, the entire toy vibrates, so you can also press the ‘longer’ side against your body. I find it hard to switch through all of them, so [the Maude Vibe’s settings] weren’t a ‘con’ for me,” said the reviewer. “And I definitely didn’t get bored with this toy, thanks to how powerful the three speeds are, as well as how versatile it is.”

Wand vibrators are a favorite for many people with vulvas, simply because they offer “pretty intense” sensations, says Richmond. And WH’s reviewers agree that the Magic Wand is the best of the best, thanks to its unparalleled power.
One Women’s Health editor described the Magic Wand Rechargeable as “the gold standard” of wand vibrators. “The Magic Wand is the only vibrator that lives full-time on my nightstand, and no matter how many other toys I try, nothing can replace it,” they said. “The strength of this vibrator is its strong suit—so much so that I never need the highest level. Even on the second setting, I can use this vibe through my jeans and still get the job done.”
Our tester also loved using the Magic Wand with a partner. “The long handle makes it easy to position between bodies during partnered sex, and the large head makes it easy for another person to aim without worrying about getting to the exact right spot,” they added. They did initially worry that the rechargeable model wouldn’t be as strong as the Magic Wand Original, but noted that “each charge lasts for ages,” and you can also use the vibrator while it’s plugged in.

All that said, another Women’s Health tester found this vibrator to be too strong. “I can see why the Magic Wand is a classic. It’s a real workhorse of a vibrator,” they said. “But for me, it felt a little clunky and too intense.” So if you’re looking for a smaller, more ergonomic wand vibrator and don’t mind vibrations that are a little less powerful, consider another option, like the Dame Com.

G-spot vibrators are pretty self-explanatory: They’re toys designed to target the G-spot, or the erogenous zone located about one to two inches deep in the vaginal canal. But shopping for a G-spot vibrator can be slightly harder. Our reviewers found many products to be too girthy, or not girthy enough, to be fully satisfying. But one tester noted that the Lelo Gigi 3—which has an insertable length of 3.5 inches and a tapered, soft head—was large enough to feel good, but not too intimidating, especially for first-timers.
“The slightly-curved shape was perfect for hitting my G-spot,” raved one Women’s Health editor. “Plus, the texture felt totally luxurious: The body-safe silicone is super soft, sleek, and smooth.” They specifically loved how versatile this vibrator was to use, noting that “the flat end of the vibrator head is perfect for a warm-up clit massage before turning up the heat with a G-spot orgasm.”
Our reviewer also enjoyed syncing this toy with the Lelo app because it was not only easy to toggle between the eight different vibration modes, but it allowed her to unlock two additional modes as well. “When using the app, learning the names of the different modes (such as 'Stimulated,' 'Overjoyed,' and 'Exhilarated') helped me better select which one I was most interested in. With a whopping 25 vibration combinations, it features a contoured shape similar to the Lelo Gigi 3, and is also quiet and waterproof. This vibrator “felt like a massage chair for my vagina,” according to another tester. “It sounds weird, but was incredible.”
Wearable vibrators are toys specifically designed and marketed to stay in place during solo or partnered sex. And of the wearable vibrators that WH editors tested, our team found Dame’s Eva to be the best option for those who want a hands-free experience. “Her wings tuck under your labia and stay there, so the body of it is vibrating on your clitoris,” explains Richmond. The first question our reviewers considered when testing each vibrator was what type of physical contact typically turns them on and how well a given toy could replicate that feeling. “How do you orgasm? For a lot of people, that’s going to be direct clitoral stimulation,” says Richmond. Testers who preferred clitoral stimulation and/or were still figuring out what they liked started with some kind of clitoral vibrator that stimulates the vulva externally, Mintz recommends. Reviewers who said they usually had their best orgasms when something (or someone) was penetrating them tested insertable G-spot vibrators instead. And those who love simultaneous external and internal stimulation—specifically, the feeling of being penetrated while having their clitoris touched—tested dual-stimulation toys, like rabbit vibrators.
Types of Vibrators
Once our testers determined their preferred type of stimulation, they got even more specific when assessing the type of sensations each toy offered. Many people get off from clitoral contact—but do they prefer the rumbly vibrations typical of a wand, or the buzzy feeling of a bullet? Or those who love the feeling of receiving oral sex might opt for a clitoral suction vibrator, says Richmond.
Also, our testers considered how pinpointed and precise they like their clitoral stimulation to be. “Do you like it very direct, just on your clitoris, in which case you might want a smaller or a suction-based vibrator that’s targeted to the clitoris?” says Richmond. “Or do you get more stimulated from coverage over your vulva, in which case you might want something a little bigger?”
Our reviewers who tested G-spot and/or rabbit vibrators also took into account the width and length of the penetrative arm. When shopping for an internal sex toy, you can always consider your own experiences with penetration from prior partners’ penises, dildos, or even fingers, says Laino. How much penetration typically feels good? Those who are unsure should try a smaller G-spot toy rather than a girthier one, says Laino.
Our reviewers only tested vibrators made of body-safe materials, including medical-grade silicone, borosilicate glass, stainless steel, Pyrex, and ABS plastic (for noninsertable parts). “Some materials are much safer for our bodies than others,” says Mintz. “High-quality, medical-grade silicone is not porous, whereas with some toys, you’ve got to be more careful.” Vibrators made from porous materials (like soft rubber) could harbor germs and bacteria, which could lead to painful infections, even if a toy is cleaned regularly.
Many rechargeable vibrators have a battery life of at least one hour, although some toys (like the Womanizer Premium 2) can last up to four hours without a charge. While trying each product, our testers discerned how long the toy could hold a charge, how long it took to charge, and the likelihood of its battery dying mid-masturbation session.
Relatively quiet vibrators are a must for people with roommates, kids, and/or thin walls. While testing, we prioritized discreet vibrators over loud ones; many reviewers compared a vibrator's noise level to others they tested, or have tried in the past. On a related note, many of our testers also preferred vibrators that were easy to stow away or pack for travel, as opposed to bulkier products that took up more space.
Not every product is labeled as a waterproof or splash-proof toy, but many are. Our reviewers put these vibrators to the test in the shower and bath, in order to identify which ones actually hold up in water.
Our team tested vibrators with just three or four speeds and settings, as well as vibrators with unlimited settings. Ultimately, our testers found that the quality of the settings mattered more than the quantity of options—but in some cases, reviewers found that even the strongest speeds weren't sufficient.
Some vibrators can be complicated, so our testers answered a multitude of questions about how straightforward each product was. Was the toy easy to hold and intuitive to use?
