QuestionThis is kind of a strange question, but I've always wondered - if you chew sugarfree gum but do not swallow it, do you still ingest five calories? Or are those calories in the gum base that you spit out? This is one of those life quesitons that's always kind of intrigued me. Any input would be appreciated.
AnswerNo! You can not ingest anything you don't swallow. However, this is not that simple on the long run. The matter is, the sweet taste alone, without ingesting and digesting anything, makes the body release insulin, thus increasing general hunger. Next time you eat, you eat more - and the extra calories do get in!
