Budget-Friendly Healthy Eating Tips & Salt Reduction Strategies

Question
Hi Marci,
2 part question:
- To keep this short and simple, do you have any tips that might help me learn to eat right on a budget. I dont have a lot of money to spend on fresh meats, fruits, veggies etc. I also have a serious salt addiction :( Chips are my weakness... and I eat a lot of fast food.
- My thighs build muscle very fast, I've been working out 4-5 times a week for the last 2 months now and I notice they are already getting thicker. I usually either power walk a local flat trail or work on the elliptical for 25 min then do some core exercise on the floor and arm toning work outs. Any tips for keeping the size of my thighs down? The last thing I want is bigger hips and thighs (thats where I am the heaviest)
Thanks so much!

Answer
Hey Rebecca,

alright so for the first question - you don't have a lot of money for fresh foods and meats - yet you eat a lot of fast food?

ditch the fast food and save your money.  I'm sure if you save the money you're spending on fast foods you'll be able to at least buy some decent things - like fruits/veggies and proper whole grain cereals and multi grain breads.  These things are all good cause they can last you 2-5 days.

If you crave potato chips, corn chips, or any snack chip, try popcorn instead. Two ounces of potato chips have 304 calories, 20 grams of fat, 2 grams of fiber, and 365 milligrams of sodium. Three cups of popcorn (unsalted and unbuttered) have 93 calories, 1 gram of fat, 3.5 grams of fiber, and 1 milligram of sodium.

That would be a good start.  Do you currently work? live on your own?

Second Question

IN terms of thighs, part of it could be genetics.  But what you could try and do is perform pilates or yoga type exercises to contract your muscles while they are being stretched (eccentric contraction).  This will lean out your muscles for a longer leaner look rather than the "thick" look.

But again it could be genetics and just the way your body is made up.

Another thing you can try and do is perform lower body exercises with less weights but more reps.  This will help you tone and define more rather than build strength and muscle.

Hope that helps Rebecca!

And if my answer helped you out at all please leave a rating.

Many thanks,
