AnswerYou've got several different issues going on here.
Most Dr.s want to repair an umbilical hernia because in some cases tissue can get stuck in the opening, which is not only extremely painful, but more rarely, blood circulation to the impinged tissue can be cut off. This is a life threatening condition and require emergency surgery.
If when lying down, the herniated tissue does not fall back into your body, then your situation is more severe, and most likely your Dr. will want you have surgical repair to prevent a most serious problem from developing.
But if the herniated tissue does fall back into your abdomen, then some Dr.s will OK a wait and see strategy. You should discuss the pros and cons of your unique situation with your OBGYN.
As to the abdominal separation, there are specific postpartum exercises you can do which will help re-close your midline. There exercises will also strengthen and stabilize your core, as well as flatten your abdomen, and help reduce/eliminate your back pain.
