QuestionI am currently undergoing infertility treatment in Taiwan. I was stimulated with gonal-f and hcg, and I am currently on day 8 after intercourse. Initially I was put on a vaginal progesterone cream Crinone 8%, but since I did not tolerate it well (spot bleeding, itchiness and lots of discharge), my doctor put me on progesterone injection as of yesterday. Unfortunately, the nurses misread the prescription (!), and I was administered an injection of 125 mg progesterone whereas the doctor had prescribed 50 mg. A few hours after the shot I was exteremely dizzy and had a huge migraine... today I again have a bit of spot bleeding. I took the the daily 50 mg injection this morning and feel ok now. My question to you is whether this large dosis of progesterone I had yesterday can do any harm to the overall project of a healthy pregnancy? (My medical treatment is conducted in Chinese, and though I speak it well, I find my questions to the doctor mostly go unanswered). Thank you for your time.
AnswerHello Inge from Taiwan,
I don't think that the amount of progesterone that you received is of sufficient dosage to interfere with your chances of pregnancy. I often double up on my progesterone dose with my IVF patients. They receive both injectable progesterone (50 mg) and vaginal Crinone 8% or Endometrin 100 mg twice per day. I do this to prevent implantation failure due to inadquate endometrial development from a lack of b-integrins, because the treatment for inadequate b-integrins, proteins that are required for implantation, is to increase the progesterone.
Good Luck,
