Natural Remedies for Chapped Lips: Effective Home Care

Lipstick appliance, constant wetting of lips with saliva leads to more chapped lips. Even low moisture, exposure to sun, dehydration and lip infection can also lead to chapped lips. Dryness, redness, lip pain, cracked and rough lips are common symptoms of chapped lips.

As the season demands lip care, here are natural remedies to cure chapped lips.

  • Prefer glossy lipstick than dry ones and use unflavored lip balms. Avoid flavored tooth paste and apply humidifier at regular intervals to prevent the lips from drying.
  • Rub cucumber slice on the lips. This is a natural remedy to cure chapped lips. You can also apply margosa leaf extract.
  • Aloe vera gel and saline bath are also natural remedy to cure chapped lips.
  • Exfoliate the lips regularly by gently rubbing the lips with soft toothbrush or cloth piece. Don't rub hard and avoid picking up the dry or dead skin from the lips. It can lead to bleeding and increase the problem.
  • After exfoliating the lips, apply some moisturizer to keep it moisturized. The best time to apply moisturizer is before going to bed as eating removes the layer. This protective layer also protects the lips from getting affected by chemicals from cosmetic products like lipstick and lip gloss.
  • Try to keep the lips natural. Avoid applying cosmetic products if possible as it closes the pores from getting air. 
  • Massage the lips with milk cream, lime juice or wheat germ oil to keep it nourished.

  • Papaya is found to be very effective lip care. It is used widely to cure chapped or dry lips. Papaya softens the lips and keeps it hydrated.
  • Have lots of water as dehydration is one of the basic reasons for chapped lips. Proper lip care is ensured only if the body is hydrated as lips don't secrete natural oils. 
  • Vitamin deficiency can also lead to dry lips. Tomatoes, carrots, whole grains, beetroot, legumes and green vegetables are vitamin A rich food. Iron and nutritional food consumption is a must for lip care.
