Debunking Common Skin Care Myths: What You Really Need to Know

Obedience is good, ignorance isn’t. In all aspects of life the do’s and don’ts have been placed before us. Sadly we always follow them without ever validating their reliability. That’s how we are conditioned since childhood. But not anymore. I am not prodding towards a rebellion! Am just going to bust some skin care myths that have been holding ground for ages now. At the end of it I know there will be many gaping mouths and wide eyes!

1. Myth: Dryness causes wrinkles

Dry skin tends to age faster than oily skin in the long run but dry and flaky skin is not same as wrinkling. Lines on dry and flaky skin can be smoothened by moisturizing it.

2. Myth: Steam does good to acne prone skin

Harsh and extreme humidity causes acne prone skin to flare up. The sweat open up the pores and then excites the activity of the sebaceous glands. The excess oil secreted by the glands thus clogs the skin.

3. Myth: Ears and eyes don’t breakout

The skin around eyes, ears and inside the nose has pores that are just as vulnerable to breakout as you face. Sadly, everyone including experts often seem to forget this vital aspect.

4. Myth: My BFF’s favorite eye cream will suit me

In beauty care one size DOES NOT fit all. For puffy eyes gel creams with caffeine are suited and for under eye circles, creams with vitamin C are recommended.

5. Myth: Natural is good

Not always. Not everything. Just because a gift of nature doesn’t mean it will suit your skin. Chilly is natural do we go applying it all over the face? Likewise every essential oil, plant derived colorants and extracts cannot be applied without testing its effects. If they don’t suit you, the effects can be just as disastrous as their synthetic counterpart.

6. Myth: Magical vitamin E

Regarded as nothing short of a wonder, vitamin E finds itself present in almost every second beauty product in one or the form. It does stabilize free radical in the skin, but it also carries the risk of irritating the skin when it comes in contact with other elements of nature like light, heat and oxygen.

7. Myth: No moisturizing for acne prone skin

Oily skin also requires moisturizing to prevent outbreaks. No, this is not a typo but a skincare fact. Skin flakes often clog pores and cause outbreaks on oily skin. The only thing that needs a mention is that the moisturizer should be oil-free or non-comedogenic.

8. Myth: No pain no gain

Certainly not when it comes to your skin care regime. Discard any product that causes any itching, tingling or even slight burning sensation upon application.

9. Myth: It is possible to shrink pores

Products that claim to shrink pores are waste because there is no way to do it. The only way they can be minimized is through exfoliation and regular facials.

10. Myth:  Sunscreen of SPF 30 will provide double the protection of SPF 15

SPF 30 has the capacity to give only 4 percent more sun protection as compared to a sunscreen 15.

The above are the skin care facts and myths that help you understand your skin so that your skin care regime does not go wrong.
