Toe Nail Falling Off: Pain, Causes, and What to Expect

Whether or not your toe hurts when a nail falls off depends on a few factors:

* The cause of the nail falling off: If the nail is falling off due to trauma (like stubbing your toe badly), the toe will likely be painful. The trauma itself caused damage to the nail bed and surrounding tissue. If the nail is falling off due to a fungal infection or other underlying condition, there might be less pain, especially if the process is slow and gradual.

* How much of the nail bed is exposed: The nail protects the sensitive skin underneath. If the entire nail comes off, the exposed nail bed can be very sensitive to pressure, temperature changes, and friction. This can cause pain or discomfort. If only a portion of the nail comes off, the sensitivity might be less.

* Infection: If the nail bed becomes infected after the nail falls off, it will be painful, red, swollen, and may have pus.

* Individual pain tolerance: Everyone experiences pain differently.

In general, expect some sensitivity and discomfort. Keep the area clean and covered with a bandage. If you notice signs of infection or the pain is severe, see a doctor.
