Nail Growth & Hardening: Understanding the Nail Matrix

New nails are made and hardened in the nail matrix.

The nail matrix is located under the skin at the base of your nail, near the cuticle. It's the part of your nail bed responsible for producing new cells that eventually become the nail plate. As these new cells grow, they push the older cells forward. These older cells become flattened, hardened, and translucent, forming the visible nail. The hardening process is called keratinization, where the cells become filled with the protein keratin.
