Fingernails vs. Toenails: Which Grows Faster & Why?

You've got it backwards! Fingernails generally grow faster than toenails. There are a few reasons for this:

* Blood Supply and Circulation: Fingernails tend to have better blood circulation than toenails. Blood carries nutrients and oxygen essential for cell growth, so a richer supply leads to faster growth.

* Trauma/Use: Fingernails are exposed to more minor trauma and use throughout the day (typing, writing, picking things up, etc.). This stimulation can signal the body to increase cell production for repair and growth.

* Sun Exposure: Though not the primary factor, some believe that greater sun exposure to hands may play a minor role, as sunlight aids in Vitamin D production, which is important for overall health.

* Distance from Heart: As the fingertips are closer to the heart, they receive freshly oxygenated and nutrified blood supply sooner than the toenails.

Typical Growth Rates:

* Fingernails: Grow about 3-4 millimeters (0.12-0.16 inches) per month.

* Toenails: Grow about 1-2 millimeters (0.04-0.08 inches) per month.

It takes about 4-6 months for a fingernail to fully regrow, while a toenail can take 12-18 months.
