Fingernail Layers: Understanding Nail Structure & Growth

Fingernails have three main layers:

1. The Nail Plate: This is the hard, visible part of the nail that we see. It's made of keratin, a tough protein.

2. The Nail Bed: This is the living tissue underneath the nail plate. It contains blood vessels and nerves.

3. The Matrix: This is the hidden layer at the base of the nail, where new nail cells are produced. It's responsible for nail growth.

So, while the nail itself is made of a single layer (the plate), the structure of the nail is made up of these three layers that work together.
