Blush, also known as rouge, is a type of makeup which is often applied to the apples of your cheek in order to give a healthy glow to your skin tone. Commonly found in the form of a powder, sometimes blush is also used to make the face look slim.
Like many other forms of makeup, rouge is considered to have originated in ancient Egypt, way before when people relied on naturally occurring vegetable (like beetroot, strawberry) and mineral dyes for preparing the blush.
Although blush makeup is usually applied to the cheekbones, earlier people applied blush on the lips as well in order to accentuate their beautiful kohl-lined eyes.
Another fact, there were times when both men and women wore rouge to add the pop of red.
In Britain’s Victorian Age, when wearing makeup was associated with various religious beliefs or low morals – ladies resorted to pinching their cheeks and biting their lips to make them appear red instead.
The whole idea of adding colour to your cheeks is to simulate a healthy and natural glow, and to provide a more youthful appearance. However, expertly applied blushes not only add verve to your skin, but also flatter your face shape or amplify your facial structure.
Blush usually aggravates redness and looks blotchy on uneven skin. The solution? A great primer. That way you have a mild base for your blush to go over smoothly. We swear by Benefit’s The POREfessional base.
Whether you have oily skin or not, a layer of translucent powder for your powder blush will help the pigment to go on consistently and last longer. If you like a muggy look and normally dodge powder, just powder the area where you’ll be applying blush.
There are three types of blushes: Powder, liquid, and creamy. While powder is applied with medium-sized flat brush, both liquid and creamy blushes are applied with the fingers.
Ideally, powder blush should be applied on facial powder, and if you are applying it on bare skin or over foundation, make sure to take the blush on a very soft brush so that it doesn’t streak.
For that perfect application, add a thin layer of blush, (you can use two different shades and blend uniformly to see how you like the brightness) and then add more if necessary and blend again.
Perfect Placement For proper placement of blush, use the old smile technique and twirl the blush directly on your cheekbones, blending back towards the ears. Also, remember to blend the blush evenly, so that it gives a natural look. When applied correctly, blush can give the illusion of pulling your face upward, and correcting it.
Point to remember: Blush must compliment your skin tone – fair skin looks best with peachy tones, wheatish skin with warmer tones, and dark skin with plum or berry.
