The first commercially available lip balm, ChapStick, was originally unflavored. It was invented in the 1880s by Charles Browne Fleet, a Lynchburg, Virginia pharmacist. It wasn't until later, when the product was mass-produced and marketed by other companies, that flavors were introduced. So, in essence, the "first" lip balm flavor was likely the flavor of the original base ingredients, which would have been a waxy, petroleum-based taste.
