How to Maintain Vibrant Hair Color: Expert Tips & Tricks

Colouring your hair is one of the most fun makeovers options ever! With so many shades to choose from and so many styles to try out, there is a lot one can do with hair colours.

You head to the salon, select a colour and get a new ‘you.’

The process doesn’t stop there though. Colouring your hair is fun, but it is equally important to ensure that you follow the caring steps post colour.

We all know that regular use of chemicals in our hair can damage them in the long run. Hair colours are loaded with chemicals. Ignore the basic hair care steps and you can end up with dry and brittle hair that is similar to being fried!

To keep your colour looking great and make sure your hair is in good shape, follow these simple hair care routines.

Taking care of coloured hair:

1. Use shampoo and conditioners meant for colored hair:

  • Make sure you only use products that are exclusively made for colour treated hair.
  • These are meant to keep the color intact and make it last longer
  • These products will form a protective layer on your hair. This will help in minimizing the damage caused by the chemicals present in hair colours.

2. Shampoo only twice a week:

  • Shampooing your hair too much strips the hair of natural oils
  • Restricting your shampoo routine to twice a week will ensure the hair color does not get washed away faster.
  • Use a shampoo once or twice a week.

3. Get a good dry shampoo:

  • A dry shampoo is a great alternative for days when you may feel your hair is getting greasy.
  • Using a dry shampoo ensures you can restrict your regular shampoo to about twice a week.
  • A dry shampoo will help revive your hair in between two washes
  • This will help keep your hair looking fresh and clean.
  • Alternatively, you can use baby powder to absorb all the oil from the head.
  • Massage it lightly on the scalp on the greasy parts. The talc will absorb the grease.

4. Use cold water for shampoo:

When washing your hair, use cold water instead of warm or hot water. Cold water will keep your hair color intact for longer.

5. Go for regular touch ups:

You will need to get the roots of your hair touched up every few weeks, depending on the rate of hair-growth.Recommended time frame is getting a touch up every six months. Those who have faster hair growth may need to touch up the colour every four months or so.

A few tips to remember whenever you decide to go for a hair colouring session:

  • Trim: Make sure your hair is in good shape by regularly giving it a trim. Hair that is brittle or damaged will suffer more damage when you colour it.
  • Regular professional hair treatments: Colouring your hair is a big investment, in terms of money, time, effort, and of course, your hair! Make sure you take adequate care of your hair by going for regular professional treatments. Hair spa, conditioning treatments and head massages are some of the things that you can indulge your hair in.
  • Limit the use of hot water:Using cold water to rinse your hair will hold the colour longer.
  • Oil massage: Nourish your hair at home by regularly oiling your hair.
  • Avoid sun exposure: Avoid stepping out in the sun too soon after colouring your hair. Avoid it in general as much as possible.

Try out some funky shades and see how they instantly transform your entire look. Colouring will of course damage your hair to some extent, but you can keep it at a minimum by taking proper care.

Follow these few steps and don’t shy away from colour. Do tell us which colour you dyed!
