Tame Frizz: 5 Proven Tips for Smooth, Manageable Hair

Frizzy hair or flyaway is one major hair hassle that most women complain about. The nature of curly hair is that the cuticle is naturally open due to lack of moisture, leading to frizzy hair. Frizz happens when dry and porous hair sucks up moisture in the air, causing the shaft to swell. Thick, coarse and curly hair has a higher tendency to frizz, especially in summer when humidity levels are at their highest. There is no cure for frizzy hair, but here are five simple tips to help you control and calm your frizzy hair.

How to Control Frizzy Hair?

1. A Good Haircut:

A good haircut is the best way to control frizzy hair. Get your curls trimmed every 6 months to get rid of split ends, one of the most common causes of frizzy hair. Do not cut your hair too short as the humidity gets trapped in shorter hair easily, causing frizzy hair. Cutting off the damaged hair will also give a healthy look to the curls. You can also ask your hair stylist to thin out the hair if it is too thick. This will make the hair manageable and will tame it down.

2. Shampoo and Conditioner:

Apply a hydrating and repairing shampoo. Well-nourished hair is less likely to react to humidity. Use a gentle shampoo to remove the dirt build-up from the scalp, allowing the natural oils to condition the hair follicles and scalp, thereby controlling frizz. Do not shampoo your hair daily as it strips off the natural oils from the scalp. Wash the hair thoroughly to remove shampoo traces.

The high amounts of conditioner coat the hair shaft, making it harder for the moisture to sink in. Use a mild conditioner to moisturize the curls. Leave the conditioner for a few minutes before rinsing it out. You can also use carbonated water to rinse the hair. The low pH value of carbonated water will control frizz.

Do not blow-dry the hair as it roughens the hair cuticles, making it frizzy. Wrap your hair for several minutes in a towel to soak excess water. Towel rubbing can cause hair breakage, making it more vulnerable to frizz.

3. Anti-Frizz Products:

Using the correct hair products can help you greatly in managing and controlling the frizzy curls. There are several frizz control products available in the market, especially designed for curly hair. Serum coats each strand of the hair, making the cuticles smooth. Apply anti-frizz serum or mousse on damp hair, distribute it with a wide-toothed comb and let it dry naturally. Do not forget to apply a heat protectant before blow-drying the hair. Do not run your fingers through the hair until it is completely dry.

4. Hot Oil Treatment:

Hot oil treatment can give you temporary control over frizzy hair. Indulge in a hot oil treatment twice a week to notice positive results. Jojoba oil is best suited for curly hair as it helps to strengthen the cuticles, preventing hair frizz. You can also apply coconut or olive oil for the hot oil treatment.

5. Natural Remedies:

  • Apple cider vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar is one of the best natural ingredients to tame frizzy hair. Shampoo your hair and give it a final rinse with equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar. The acidity of apple cider vinegar will not just control frizz, but will also impart shine to the hair.

  • Beer:

You can also use beer as a final rinse for the hair. Beer replenishes moisture to the scalp, preventing frizzy hair. Rinse your hair with dark beer and let it stay for a few minutes. Wash it off with cold water to get rid of the smell.

  • Hair mask:

Mayonnaise and avocado hair mask is a very effective natural remedy to control frizz in curly hair. Mix one cup of mayonnaise with ½ cup of mashed avocado to make a smooth paste. Apply it on the hair and scalp, and cover it with a plastic cap. Leave it for 20 minutes and wash off. Apply it once a week for best results.
